Is the set tested weight limit on fishing line accurate?
Specific Question
Is the set tested weight limit on fishing line, (8lb, 15lb, 20lb) accurate?
Variables
Independent Variable:
Fishing Line
Dependent Variable:
Weight Held (Lbs)
Variables That Need to Be Controlled:
Same Length of fishing line.
Same Fishing Line Brand.
Using Same Weights.
Going up Weight Slowly for Accurate Results.
Same procedural Set-up.
Same Know Tying Weights to Line.
Hypothesis
I hypothesize that the line will snap a pound before the set tested weight or a pound after the set tested weight.
Graph of Hypothesis:
Experimental Design
I will be conducting my experiment at my house in my room. I have hooks that will work great for tying the line to it. I will be the only one doing this experiment. I can tie the weights on and record the results all by myself. I will be doing three trials for each line. I will be putting the data on a printed out spreadsheet and then I will record it on my computer. I will show how I tested each fishing line using a digital camera.
Materials List:
Screw in hook
Pencil
Data Table
Weights (1lb, 5lb, 10lb)
Three, 20 in. cuts of each Fishing Line (8lb, 15lb, 20lb)
Digital Camera
Cushion for when line breaks
Detailed Procedure:
Go to room for conducting experiment.
Screw hook into wall or ceiling.
Tie one end of the 8lb line on the hook
Keep tying weights on the the opposite end of the line until it breaks
When it breaks, record the data.
Take line off the hook.
Add a new piece of 8lb line on the hook and repeat steps 3 and 6.
Add another new piece of 8lb line on the hook and repeat steps 3 and 6.
Repeat steps 3-8 with the 15lb line instead of 8lb line.
Repeat steps 3-8 again except with 20lb line instead of 15lb line.

Background Research
The fishing line strength tested is tested in pounds or lb. It’s a measurement of how much weight the fishing line can take before if breaks.
The most commonly used fishing knot is the Palomar knot, which is a simple “under the bridge” and then adding the extra line through the middle of the loop and tighten it.
The tension at fishing line breaks is called the ``breaking strength''. What breaking strength you need for a fishing line to stop a salmon that weighs 90.0 N in 18.0 cm if the fish moves horizontally with a velocity of 2.5 m/s. The acceleration must be constant to get accurate results.
Tension: Force + Velocity=Breaking Strength
Newton’s laws say that gravity pulls down on all of matter. The more the ma
tter weighs, the more gravity is pulling on it. So, the more weight I place on the line will add more tension to the line soon breaking the line at it’s weak point.
The original purpose of this experiment was to find out if the if the set tested weight of fishing line would be accurate for fishing, as well as to see if consumers are getting quality fishing line. The results of the experiment were that they are really close to the actual set tested weight. The results were within less than of the actual set tested weight. For example the 8lb fishing line the average was right around the 8 lbs with an average of 8.08lbs. Even at the 20lb line the average was 19.83lbs. These were very close to the actual set tested weight
Discussion
My Hypothesis was that the weight I tested the fishing line at would be a pound heavier than tested or a pound lighter than tested. My results did not support my hypothesis. Instead of being a whole pound off the set tested weight it was only about half or three quarters of a pound off the set tested weight. Some patterns and trends in my data is that all the points in the graph are right around the the line with its weight. All the points are very close to the actual tested weight as well. I think the test went smoothly with minor problems. Everything went well with the 8lb line. Then I noticed the line was being used up way too quickly, so I almost ran out by the time I put on the last weight. This made it very difficult. At one point, I burned the back of my hand with the line. If I could improve my experiment I would make sure to give each line more than twenty inches. A future study I may look at is if the bend of the fishing pole increases the strength of the fishing line, especially with bigger fish.
